There’s nothing quite as special as having all your favourite wedding moments commemorated to film so you can live them over and over for years to come. From the walk down the aisle, to the speeches (both comedic and heartwarming), your day is filled with precious moments. But it’s easy for the little details to fade over time.
That’s where Black & White, a wedding photo and film duo from Canmore, Alberta, come in. This couple bring their spirit of adventure and creativity to every shoot, making for some truly spectacular wedding photos and films.
We spoke with Chloe and Russell to learn a bit more about how they got started, what makes them tick, and what they love about shooting weddings in the Rocky Mountains.
What do you like to do when you’re not shooting?
It is rare to catch us without a camera in hand or editing photos/films at home. That being said, we do have some down time where you can typically find us exploring our wild backyard of Canmore, Alberta, either hiking, camping, skiing or canoeing!
How long have you been shooting weddings?
We established Black & White Weddings as a company four years ago, but started shooting
weddings two years before that.
How did you get started in photo and film?
Growing up in small mountain towns of both Truckee California and Canmore Alberta, picking up a camera capturing our surroundings and adventures seemed only natural. We have been truly blessed to turn our hobby into our daily lives, sharing our passion with friends, family and couples from around the world.>
From where do you feel you draw the most inspiration?
Our wild surroundings and peoples love stories are both inspirations for us. You can see much deeper into a photograph when learning the history of the couple you are shooting. Not only does this build a connection with your client but their love emulates through the photograph just that much more, always leaving a lasting impression on us.
Do you feel like Canmore is a good place for creatives?
Canmore is an amazing place for creatives! For photographers, filmmakers and artists like us you can always find new places to explore in the Rocky Mountains to inspire and build
community with. Canmore & the surrounding Bow Valley have great outlets such as Arts Place or The Banff Center offering events such as The Banff Film Festival, featuring short films inspired by mountains and their people. We love the tight nit, friendly and creative community this event attracts!>
Who are some of your influences/people that inspire you in the industry?
There is no single person that inspires us. It is the collective of artists and professionals who
we work with day to day that make us want to be that much better! That being said, we are
also inspired by photographers and filmmakers we see in the online community who hopefully we have the honour to work with someday! We like to draw inspiration from many different people and their strengths. Some photographers are amazing with light, others with colour and some with composition. We draw inspiration from many different people on all of these aspects.
Can you tell us a bit about how you developed and refined your own personal style?
We’ve always been attracted to capturing candid real time moments and editing to achieve
natural rich earth tones. With time and experience, these two things have really shaped our
style of photography.>
How would you describe your personal style?
Our style is a natural, moody and earthy, we believe it helps the subjects stand out just that much more!
What advice would you give to someone looking to find the perfect wedding photographer/filmmaker for them?
If you are looking for a wedding photographer/filmmaker, we would suggest finding someone whose style appeals to you, as well as making sure they compliment your personality. You will be with this person for a lot of your day, it helps to have someone who is nice and fun to be around.
What advice would you give to someone who’s nervous about having their photo taken?
If you are nervous about your photo being taken that is ok, most people are! Just make sure to communicate with the photographer, we are here to help you enjoy every moment! Most
photographers will shoot to your strengths, make you feel confident and help you along the
way. If you are super nervous we would highly recommend an engagement session. This helps you build a relationship with your photographer as well as get the confidence you need in their ability.
Are there any emerging wedding trends that excite you?
We have been loving seeing all the small niche vendors at weddings. Examples being extravagant charcuterie or Champagne VW bus!
Are there any emerging photo and film trends that excite you?
Photography & filmmaking is always hitting new ideas and trends this is part of what makes it exciting day after day. A new trend that we have been in love with is in home engagement sessions. We love to capture couples in their day to day, whether it being cozying up in bed or cooking together in the kitchen.>
Why would you recommend getting married in the Bow Valley?
The Bow Valley is not only a beautiful destination to get married for the scenery, it’s also an
exceptional hub of quality vendors that work in the industry. You can’t go wrong! They are
professional, happy and excited to share their small slice of heaven with you.
What are some of your favourite things about where you live?
We are athletic people so we love the ability to run out our door and be in the mountains. While we like being outside, we also love a good eat and Canmore is full of them! That being said, having an airport an hour and a half from where we live is a huge benefit to someone who travels as much as we do.
“Black & White created an absolutely beautiful film of our wedding! They really captured all the best moments, including plenty of candid shots. We felt really comfortable working with them – they were both so encouraging and lovely, and our guests loved them too! We’ve had plenty of compliments on our film and will enjoy watching it for years to come.”
