Watching your wedding video should bring you right back to the most special moment of your life. The right videographer will understand how to capture the essence of who you are as a couple and a true representation of the magical atmosphere of your wedding day.
But a good videographer is much more than their editing skills. So, while it’s important to carefully review their portfolio of work, it’s also vital that you choose someone whose personality jives with your own. Don’t forget that your wedding videographer is going to be with you throughout the whole day! They should be someone who adds to the fun, makes you feel comfortable, and understands when to melt into the background and just capture the moment.
Oscar Lima has built his career on this philosophy, providing high-quality videos and a fantastic experience on the day itself. Since starting his videography business, Castaño Films, Oscar has curated a reputation for modern, timeless videos and warm professionalism for weddings throughout the Banff and Canmore region.
We had a chat with Oscar to find out more about the man behind the camera!
Tell us a little about yourself!
My name is Oscar. I was born and raised in La Paz, Bolivia. I studied Political Science and always thought that I would be involved in politics in my home country. However, I fell in love with a Canadian girl who would be my future wife and who made me change all my life plans (not complaining though). So here I am in the Canadian Rockies filming Banff wedding videos!
I love travelling, watching old movies, reading history books, following soccer and going to the opera. I love connecting with people and really enjoy being part of their most important day: their wedding. It’s great to be able to tell their love stories visually through film.
How did you get started in wedding videography?
Castaño Films has been a project of mine for many years. However, I wanted to study and make sure that I would be able to deliver a high-quality product before starting my business.
During a practicum in my final weeks of a two year diploma program at SAIT, I was editing a video for my wedding videography mentors. In that moment I tear up, as I felt such a strong connection with the couple in the video. That’s when I realized that I wanted to meet couples and tell their love stories and when I became passionate about this project.
Castaño is my paternal grandmother’s last name. It means chestnut in my native language, Spanish.
What services/packages do you offer?
My clients have the option of building their package. My base package is a 6+ minute feature film. From there, they can add:
Where is your favourite spot to shoot Banff wedding videos?
It’s hard to pick because the whole area is beautiful and I’m always happy in every single spot!
I like the area of Quarry Lake Park in Canmore. I like the Banff View Point on the way to Mt Norquay and Lake Minnewanka. But I think that my most epic experiences were doing a Heli session at Marvel Pass.
How would you describe your philosophy when it comes to shooting wedding videos and working with couples on the day?
My main goal is that the couple enjoys their day. Sometimes the wedding day can be tiring and stressful and I don’t want them to feel overwhelmed.
My second goal is to be a great team player. I’m not just there to get my best shots, I’m there to help other vendors deliver a great experience to the couple. I want us all to be on the same page and have a great time!
How would you describe your aesthetic?
I would describe my style as “documentary” because I go for the unstaged and unplanned real moments of the wedding with a strong storytelling focus.
What are the most frequently asked questions you hear from couples?
Probably the most frequently asked question has been about how I would work with the couple’s photographer. I think this is a legitimate concern, as videographers and photographers need to coordinate and be on the same page. I always reassure my couples letting them know that I will be in contact with their photographers and other vendors prior to the wedding just so we all have a better idea of how to work together on the wedding day. It works 99% of the time.
What is the most important advice you would give to couples when it comes to their Banff wedding videos/choosing a wedding videographer?
I would recommend making sure that your videographer has experience on how to film a wedding without being disruptive to you and your guests during the day. After all, the wedding is about the couple and their families, it’s not about the videographer’s footage.
It’s also important to make sure that the videographer knows how to work with other vendors and is a team player. And finally, I would ask them to make sure that their expectations are clear on both sides before the wedding.
Also, ask for the videographer’s portfolio and watch through multiple films to make sure you like the videographer’s editing style. Ask how many weddings they’ve done and about their experience. Remember, you get what you pay for. Also make sure you connect well with them on a personal level as they’ll be with you throughout your entire wedding day.
When thinking back over your videography career, are there any particularly funny moments, stories, or couples that stand out to you?
I had a couple that came from the U.S. in September looking for mountains and fall colours. Well, you know how the weather is here. They had the craziest blizzard during the ceremony and everything was covered in fog and snow. It’s the most memorable wedding experience we’ve had. The couple loved their video as it made them relive the experience.
“Oscar is truly amazing! He will make all your wedding video dreams come true! Oscar is very creative, listens to what you want, has amazing ideas for very beautiful shots and will work with you till your video is perfect! He truly cares to make it something so special for you and goes above and beyond to make your wedding video perfect! I think I have watched our video 50 times since our wedding which was only 6 months ago. It is so special to be able to relive the day and feel all the emotions you felt all over again. So if you are debating whether or not to hire Oscar, do it! You will not regret it!”
